preschool hands          This week in preschool, we are reviewing numbers 1 through 3 and counting to 10. We are also learning about triangles and the color red. We finish up our monthly topic of the five senses with the sense of touch. For Bible time, baby Moses has grown into a man, and God has a plan for him to save the Israelites from the Egyptian Pharaoh.

Thank you to those who have looked over the Scholastic Books flyer and placed an order that contributes to our preschool earning points. If we receive a good amount towards our school, we can order free books from Scholastic! As you can see, they offer quality products that are age appropriate for our preschoolers. Thank you also for donating items that we use every day in preschool by picking up apples from the apple tree on our front door. We really appreciate it! There are still some apples on our tree, and from time to time we will add more.

The families providing a snack this week are: Taylor on Wednesday (9/27) and Farley on Thursday (9/28). Just wanted to remind you to please provide a simple and healthy snack that can be easily distributed. Thank you!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS:

On October 13 (Friday), we will have Teddy Bear Portraits coming to the day school. More information and an order form will be sent home soon.

October 18 & 19, Laughlin Children’s Center will be here to do some testing of our preschoolers. Please be on the lookout for a letter being sent home with more information about this program. Note that there is a $5 fee. If you would like your child tested in this very useful program, please fill in the top part of the form that was also sent in your child’s folder.

October 27 (Friday) is the date for our field trip to the pumpkin patch! We will be meeting at Soergel Orchards in Wexford at 9:30 a.m. We ask that a parent or guardian transport and stay with their preschooler(s) for the entirety of the trip. The children will start with a tractor ride to the pumpkin patch where they will hear a story and pick out a pumpkin to take home. The running time is 45 minutes, and the fee is $7 per student and $2 per adult (that includes the pumpkin). Afterwards there is a fun play area for the children to explore, and they have a really nice shop which the adults will like to explore.

The preschool class has been hard at work! We have been making fun “fishy” pictures and starting to practice counting and recognizing shapes and colors around us. Our number focus this week is 3, and we will be learning about circles and the color yellow. We will be continuing our monthly topic of the five senses by talking about the senses of smell and taste. For Bible time, we are reading about Joseph and baby Moses.

We sent home a flyer for the scholastic book club. If you would like to place an order, you can do so online. Just remember to put in the teacher’s code written on the back page of the flyer. Every order earns points for the preschool, and we can receive free books for the classroom later in the year!

You also may have noticed an apple tree on the door of the preschool room. Written on the apples are items that the preschool room uses frequently. If you are able to donate that item, please take an apple with you as a reminder. There is no obligation, but any donations are very much appreciated! If there are other items that are not on the apple tree that you would like to donate just let a teacher know.

The families providing a snack this week are: Melius on Wednesday (9/20) and Carrabbia on Thursday (9/21). Just wanted to remind you to please provide a simple and healthy snack that can be easily distributed like crackers, Veggie Straws, apple slices, baby carrots, etc., and please save any sugary treats for special days. Thanks again for helping!

We made it through the first week of preschool!

Since we started getting settled into a new routine last week and are learning how to be in school, we can start to learn numbers, shapes, and colors! This week we will focus on the numbers 1 and 2, and learn about squares and the color blue.

We will be continuing our monthly topic of the five senses by talking about the sense of hearing. We will read books about animal sounds and will be learning how to listen. For Bible time, we are reading about Noah and the ark.

The Families providing a snack this week are: Bruzzese on Wednesday (9/13) and Ambriz on Thursday (9/14). Please provide a simple and healthy snack that can be easily distributed like crackers, Veggie Straws, apple slices, baby carrots, etc. Please save any sugary treats like cupcakes and cookies for special days like birthdays and holiday celebrations. Thanks for helping!

It is going to take each child a little time to adjust to being in school, but the class is doing a great job so far! Thank you for the opportunity to teach your little ones!

Welcome to the first week of preschool!

It was wonderful getting to meet many of you at orientation. I hope to continue to keep communicating with you by a weekly newsletter and blog post. I will be updating the blog towards the end of each week so that you can know ahead of time what we will be doing the following week.

We will be starting our monthly topic of the five senses by talking about the sense of sight. We will read fun colorful books and play games like “red light/green light”. For Bible time, we will be reading the story of creation and the fall of Adam. Since our animal theme is the beach and the coral reef, we will be playing with sand and doing some fun activities!

The Day School will be providing the snacks for the first week. Starting next week we will request the families to provide a snack on Wednesday for the 4 year old class and Thursday for the 3 year old class. We will let you know when your family is scheduled to bring a snack. Thanks for helping us with this!

Please don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions. The Day School number is (412) 264-0470, extension 25 or 16 for preschool.

2017-2018 Welcome Letter

preschoolWelcome to Preschool!

What an exciting time of development for your little one! Your preschooler is learning and absorbing so much during their early years, and we cannot wait to get started!

We have many exciting things planned here at Presbyterian Day School. Your child will have an opportunity to play and learn with others during story time and exploration time where we study a new theme each month such as the five senses, community helpers, the weather, nature, and much more. We will be focusing on an animal group each month as well, learning about sea life, woodland creatures, animals in the arctic, and the like. Every day we will have a Bible time where we learn about Jesus, our Savior, in the stories of the Bible. We will also explore our creative sides with art, music, and dramatic play time when we play at the different centers.

Besides learning about these educational themes, your child will have a playtime outside or in the social hall. There will also be a mid-morning snack time for refreshment. Each week we will focus on a letter of the alphabet and a number, and they will be able to recognize the letter or number, as well as shapes and colors. He or she will learn how to count, add, and subtract using manipulatives. We will send their work home in a folder each day they are in class.

We plan to have a few events during the year like visiting the pumpkin patch and having a Christmas play. We would love to have the parents involved with these activities. More information will be coming soon. We also ask parents to provide a snack for the class about once a month, and we will let you know when the snack is needed.

To prepare for our school year, we ask for you to provide a few items for your child.

Please send in:

  1. A change of clothes and underpants (in case of accidents)
  2. A sturdy folder
  3. A backpack large enough for a folder

Please don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions. The Day School number is (412) 264-0470, extension 25 or 16 for preschool.

Looking forward to getting to know your little one!
