rainbowWe are thankful to the Valley Ambulance Authority for visiting us last Friday. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children, and they were able to have hands-on experience with emergency medicine. The children also know some important safety rules, and I do hope that you will talk with them about your family emergency plans.

This week we are focusing on colors. There are fun activities planned to review the colors we have studied so far. We are also reading stories about woodland creatures like rabbits and bears. I have introduced the children to some letters, and we will be learning about “s” and “r” this week. In Bible time, we have been reading about Moses, and this week the Israelites will be entering the promised land.

The 3 year old class have their Halloween party on Tuesday, October 30th, and the 4 year old class have theirs on Wednesday, October 31st. The children are very excited about wearing costumes, and we look forward to a fun day!

ambulanceWe have an exciting week ahead of us. October is fire safety month, so we will be talking about fire safety and other safe practices in class. We are expecting a visit from the Valley Ambulance Authority on Friday, October 19. The 4 year old class and the day care will be able to walk around the truck and have a peak into the back. It will be a great way to cap off our week!

The Day School usually gets two visits a year from Teddy Bear Portraits, once in the fall and again in the spring (when the 4 year old class wears a cap and gown for their portraits). This year we have one visit scheduled, and that will be in February. The 4 year olds will be able to take pictures in a cap and gown at that time.

The Scholastic Book orders are due at the end of this week. Let me encourage you to check out the website as well as browse the flyers that are sent home. It is easy to order books online at scholastic.com, and the online orders do get processed and sent quicker. Just remember to include the code for our school so that we can earn points to purchase books for our classroom.

We are planning to have a Halloween party for each class. The 3 year old class will have their party on Tuesday, October 30th, and the 4 year old class will have theirs on Wednesday, October 31st. It would be very helpful to have some snacks and drinks for the parties, and we have created a schedule to have a few families provide items for the Halloween parties and then other families will be able to provide items for future parties. Have your children come dressed up and ready for a fun day!

Snacks for Halloween Party:

October 30 – snack items: Baker and Carpenter; drink item: Hagan

October 31 – snack items: Brown and Cannon; drink item: Farley

The families who are scheduled to provide a snack this week are: Farley on Wednesday (10/17), Maji on Thursday (10/18), and Farren on Friday (10/19). Thank you so much for your help!

pumpkin patchOur field trip to the pumpkin patch is this Thursday! The address for Soergel Orchards is 2573 Brandt School Road, Wexford, PA 15090. The location is conveniently close to Exit 73 on I-79. Our group will meet at the covered porch area at 9:15 a.m. We are scheduled to take a hay ride up to the pumpkin patch at 9:30. Our guide will read a story to the children, and then they will be able to pick out a pumpkin. (The hay ride to the pumpkin patch and back takes about 45 minutes.) The tractor and hay wagon will take us back to the farm store area where there is a playground for the children. You can stay as long as you like at that point. We will not be going to the preschool Thursday, but if you would like to take your child back to PDS day care, you can do so. Please let the staff know if you will have your child at the day care on Thursday.

In class this week we will be counting pumpkins and making leaf creatures with the leaves we collected last week. I will be introducing lowercase letters this week. Each week we will learn about 2 letters and their sounds, and we will review colors and shapes throughout the rest of October. In Bible time, we will read about how God saved baby Moses and that he had a plan for Moses to help save God’s people, the Israelites.

We are planning to have a Halloween party for each class. The 3 year old class will have their party on Tuesday, October 30th, and the 4 year old class will have theirs on Wednesday, October 31st. The children can dress up in their favorite costumes that day, and we will have games and treats for them! The families who are scheduled to provide a snack this week are: Brown on Wednesday (10/10) and Cannon on Friday (10/12). Thank you so much for your help!

IMG_1401October is here! We begin a new theme, studying the seasons and fall in particular. We will be collecting leaves as well as other fun fall activities and crafts this week. Fall months are also a good time to learn about woodland creatures. This week we will talk about birds. Our color focus is on pink and brown, and we will learn about hearts and diamonds. We will read from our Bible Story book about Joseph and how he was sold into slavery by his brothers. He believed God meant it for good, and in the end, Joseph helped save his family from the famine.

Now that the weather is getting cooler, please send a sweater or jacket for your child in case we go outside that day. Our deadline for turning in payment for the field trip is this Friday, October 5th. PDS will then make the payment to Soergel Orchards for the whole group. Younger siblings are welcome to come, and if they would like to pick out a pumpkin, the $7 fee will apply to them as well.

The families who are scheduled to provide a snack this week are: Morse on Wednesday (10/3), Linner on Thursday (10/4), and Quigley on Friday (10/5). Thank you so much for your help!

preschool news clipartThe children are learning more about themselves and about our different emotions this week. In small group, we will blend colors and learn some sign language. We have had fun practicing with various tools and colors at the easel, and this week we will learn about green and purple. We will be working with play dough as well. In Bible time, we will be learning about Abraham’s son Isaac and his sons Jacob and Esau.

Thanks to the several families who turned in orders for Scholastic books! All of the orders have been sent in, and those families can expect the books to arrive in the next week or so. New flyers for October will be coming home this week.

The snacks which our families have provided so far have been a hit with the children! The families who are scheduled to provide a snack this week are: Hathaway on Wednesday (9/26), Hagan on Thursday (9/27), and Marsh on Friday (9/28). There are still 9 students in each class. If you need any suggestions on what to bring, please look at the Parent Information handout from orientation. Thank you so much for your help!

preschool handsOur school year has started off very well! We enjoyed talking about families last week. This week, we are learning about our five senses and doing activities to learn about red, orange, circles, and rectangles. The children will also be able to look for buried treasures at the sand table. We will learn about Abraham’s faith in God as he goes to a new land.

Our first monthly scholastic orders are due this Friday, September 21. Check out the flyers sent home or have a look at the website. It is very easy to place an order online and the book selection and prices are good. The books will be mailed to the school around the end of the month, and we will send the orders home with the children. The more books our families order for their own children’s libraries at home will give us more points to order great books for our preschool library!

Thank you to the families who provided snacks last week! All of the children enjoyed them. The families who are scheduled to provide a snack this week are: Farley on Wednesday (9/19), Carpenter on Thursday (9/20), and Farren on Friday (9/21). There are still 9 students in each class.
